PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Squalane is colourless, transparent and odourless.
Squalene can come from olive oil or from shark livers. For many years, it was always shark livers and it is still possible to buy that today.
However, whatever the source, it is not something we would recommend as Squalene (note the spelling) is highly unstable and will oxidise quickly.
Squalene is naturally occurring in sebum which is skin's own natural moisturiser. When the pores become blocked with sebum, it oxidises and goes black where it is in contact with the air - which is exactly what a blackhead is. Therefore, Squalene is not something that we recommend using on your skin.
Squalane (note the different spelling) is Squalene that has been modified to be stable so that it does not oxidise.
In this form, it is excellent for the skin.
However, its original source can still be from either olive oil or shark liver.
Aromantic only stock Squalane that has been modified from Olive Oil.
Squalene naturally occurs in the sebum of the skin at a level of between 10% to 14%
The Squalene that is found in the livers of sharks keeps the oils in the liver in a liquid state down to a temperature of -38°C which is quite common as they are found in deep ocean waters.
There are still countries in the world that use shark sourced Squalene.
HOW TO USE IT
Skin Care
Squalane softens the skin and improves the elasticity of the skin.
Ideal to use in dry skin creams and lotions and oil based serums.
As it has an identical structure to the sebum that is naturally found in the skin, it sinks in very fast and prevents moisture loss.
Use this attribute in Winter protection creams and whenever skin is in need of a moisture lock.
In lip balms, it improves the sensorial feel of the balm and reduce any skin drag. The lip balm will feel much more elegant and be even better ay keeping the lips soft and moisturised.
All massage oil blends will be improved by using Squalane.
Extremely effective in night creams and intensive serums.
As Squalane has the same structure as the skin’s sebum, it can help acne prone skin very much.
It can have the effect of a “solvent” by combining with the sebum and allowing it to leave the pores more readily.
Most effective when used with a mask after steaming.
Very restorative to weather damaged skin from windburn to dry skin from sunburn.
Hair Care
Some oils like Castor Oil, can be very beneficial to the hair, but on their own, they are too sticky and unpleasant to use. Combining with Squalane makes the whole oil mixture feel lighter and more elegant.
Other
It can be used neat but we feel it is always better blended with other ingredients as it also enhances the other ingredients efficacy.
Usage can be 1% to 100% but we feel that 3-15% in your products is a very good balance.
It is heat stable up to 80°C, or just added at room temperature.
It is oil soluble so cannot be used in water based products such as toners and spritzes.
A small amount could be added to water based gels.
Combine with Camellia Seed Oil for an enhance skin flexibility.
Add to massage blends that contain Castor Oil to make the blend feel better and have more slide.
Blend with Camellia Seed Oil, Argan Oil, White Poppy Seed oil and a little Castor Oil to make a sprayable hair pomade.
